Our History

St John’s School has its origins in two private educational institutions founded in Concepción in 1936. One of these was established by Mrs Grimsditch to serve the local British community, whilst the other operated under the auspices of the Anglican Church of St John the Baptist, on Pedro de Valdivia Street.

In 1942, with the support of the British Council and against the backdrop of the Second World War, the two institutions merged to form St John’s School, initially located on Pedro de Valdivia Street. Over the following decades, the school experienced significant growth and expanded its educational community, establishing itself as a leading educational institution in Concepción.

In 1976, secondary education was established, and in 1979, St. John’s saw its first Year 12 leavers graduate. Subsequently, in 1989, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme was introduced, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic development and strengthening its international focus.
The school’s sustained growth led to plans to build new facilities. Finally, in 2005, St John’s current campus was opened at Fundo El Venado, in San Pedro de la Paz, featuring modern facilities and sports pitches.

Throughout its history, St. John’s has upheld academic excellence, growth, innovation and a forward-looking vision as its cornerstones – principles that continue to guide its educational mission and its commitment to the all-round development of its students.
