LAHC is delighted to announce the appointment of Sofia Hughes as its new Executive Officer, effective 1st October 2025. This follows a rigorous selection process with a strong field of candidates.
Sofia has extensive experience of leadership in international education and of LAHC. Based in Buenos Aires, she has held senior leadership roles at several schools, including Head of Secondary at Bede’s Grammar School (an LAHC member) and senior positions at Belgrano Day School, Northlands School and St Catherine’s Moorlands School (all former members of LAHC). She has also played an active role in LAHC’s School Review, undertaking training and contributing to a Review. Her familiarity with the process has allowed her to see the merits of such a flexible, yet meticulous model that complements internal processes to strengthen any area in our schools.
Sofia is currently Schools Development Manager for Argentina at Cambridge University Press & Assessment and Executive Secretary of the International Confederation of Principals (ICP), which brings together 35 principal associations from over 20 countries.
Commenting on her appointment, Sofia said: "I am thrilled to become the next LAHC Executive Officer. I know the organisation well and value its intimate, warm and inclusive nature. LAHC thrives on connections and the sharing of expertise already present within its vibrant network.
"I am really excited to get to know all LAHC schools and learn how we can personally support them. I will be working with Alan and the team over the summer to continue the association’s direction and mission. Our goal remains clear: to position LAHC as the go-to place for information, insight, and support on international education in Latin America."
Alan Downie, outgoing Executive Officer, added: "Sofia’s leadership, experience, and deep understanding of our region and educational context make her the ideal person to guide LAHC into its next phase. I look forward to supporting her during the transition period and am confident the association will continue to grow and innovate.
"I would like to show our appreciation for all the candidates who applied for this position. We wish them all the best and hope they continue to engage with LAHC in sharing expertise and seeking information or advice on all matters on international education in Latin America and beyond."
Sofia and Alan will both be present at the LAHC Annual Conference 2025 in São Paulo, where they will support a smooth and collaborative handover.
LAHC’s next phase is to align its functions with the strategic development plan, outlined last year, and respond proactively to the recent feedback from member schools across six key areas: communications, finances, Annual Conference, School Review, student activities, and safeguarding.
